Achromatopsia
I have had vision loss all of my life. I was born with Achromatopsia. I inherited it from my mom’s side of the family. I have been a Bioptic driver for five years now. I have had the Bioptic glasses for almost fourteen years but only driving for five. I also use red central contacts that help me see stoplights, break lights, and cut down on brightness. Dr. Windsor helped me with the Bioptic glasses and the red central contacts.
The training with the Bioptic glasses was a long experience. I took my glasses everywhere I went to learn how to use them. I sat in the passenger seat everywhere I went with my parents, on the bus ride to school, and to sporting events. It was hard at first but as time went on it got easier. The biggest way for me to learn was to practice. I took them everywhere.
The behind the wheel training was rough. I did it twice. It was easier the second time. But until I got the red centered contacts the problem was learning how to drive and have the feel of the car. The second time was easier. The combination of the glasses, contacts, and practice went well.
The staff of the Eye Associates Group (Low Vision Centers of Indiana) was very helpful for getting everything I needed to be able to drive. They helped me throughout the whole process. They helped with getting the glasses, contacts, and setting everything up with the driving instructor. They have been very concerned with the goals and future of my driving.
It has been great for me to be able to drive. I can go everywhere now. Being able to drive has given me the ability to get a good paying job. My job requires me to have a driver’s license. I have been able to help my two brothers, who cannot drive, to get them around. Being able to drive has given me freedom. I have been able to go see my niece when she was a few hours old. I can drive people around that drove me around for so many years. And I can do what ever I want whenever I want. I have in the past year bought a brand new truck. When I was young, I never thought I would be able to buy or even drive a new vehicle. I have been able to go on more trips. I have been able to go fishing, go to several concerts, and drive on dates. In the past few years I have been able to drive on mountain bike trips. I am getting ready to go ride a 12 hours race with some friends. In October we will be going to Brown County State Park to ride our bikes. I have been driving all summer for our rides. its nice to be able to do this. I love being outside riding my bikes and being able to get there by my self and to be able to take other with me.
